How to Create a MetaMask Wallet

Seven careful steps to set up your first wallet and the security habits to start on day one.

6 min read · Mintelier

Before you can mint an NFT, collect digital art, or receive payments on the blockchain, you'll need a crypto wallet. One of the most popular is MetaMask — your digital keychain.

Step 1 — Download MetaMask

MetaMask is available as a browser extension for computers and a mobile app for smartphones. Always download MetaMask from its official source. Scammers create fake versions designed to steal your information.

Step 2 — Open MetaMask

You'll be presented with two choices: import an existing wallet, or create a new wallet. If this is your first wallet, select Create a New Wallet.

Step 3 — Create a Password

Choose a password that is unique, difficult to guess, and contains a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. This password protects your wallet on your device — but the next step is even more important.

Step 4 — Save Your Secret Recovery Phrase

MetaMask will show you a list of 12 words: your Seed Phrase. These words are the master key to your wallet. If you lose your phone or computer, the Seed Phrase allows you to recover everything.

Step 5 — Write the Seed Phrase Down

1. Write them down on paper. 2. Write them in the exact order shown. 3. Double-check every word. 4. Store the paper somewhere secure.

Never take a screenshot, save it in your notes app, email it to yourself, send it through WhatsApp, or share it with anyone — including Mintelier staff.

Step 6 — Confirm Your Seed Phrase

MetaMask will ask you to confirm the words to verify that you recorded them correctly.

Step 7 — Find Your Wallet Address

Inside MetaMask, you'll see a long string like 0x7A4B...91D2. This is your wallet address — your digital mailing address. Unlike your Seed Phrase, your wallet address can be shared safely.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Losing the Seed Phrase — without it, recovery may be impossible.
  • Sharing the Seed Phrase — anyone with it controls your wallet.
  • Downloading fake wallets — always use official MetaMask sources.
